Project Balranald: Off-Grid Solar for a Large-Scale Cattle Operation in Southern NSW

Nestled near the border of New South Wales and Victoria, Glen Avon Pastoral is a large-scale cattle farming operation located just outside of Balranald.

As a primary beef supplier to Coles supermarkets across Australia, this property plays a vital role in feeding the nation.

The farm comprises several residential dwellings, extensive agricultural infrastructure, and a critical network of pumps, sheds, and feeders that form the backbone of its daily operations.

With a deep commitment to operational efficiency and long-term sustainability, Glen Avon Pastoral sought an energy solution that could keep up with their high energy demands while providing certainty in the face of unreliable grid connectivity.

After an in-depth assessment of the property’s energy consumption, geographical conditions, and long-term goals, AusPac Solar designed and deployed a custom solution tailored to the needs of Glen Avon Pastoral.
  • System Installed: An 87kW solar PV system paired with a 57kWh battery storage unit.
  • Results Achieved: The solution successfully transitioned the property to an effectively off-grid setup. Power bills dropped from $20,000 per year to a credit of $4,000 with their energy provider—effectively turning an overhead into a revenue stream.
  • Reliability Secured: The system now powers all operational and residential zones of the farm, offering stable, uninterrupted electricity regardless of grid fluctuations.
