Curious about going Off-Grid on your farm—or wondering if it’s even possible?

You're not alone.

It's one of the most common questions we get from farmers.

Check out this 7-minute video where we take you behind the scenes of how we helped a remote cattle station in Outback Queensland go Off-Grid—relying on solar and battery storage as the primary power source, with the grid available only as a backup.

This kind of system is ideal for powering:
  • Machinery sheds
  • Water pumps
  • Multiple homesteads
  • Cold rooms, and more

"Are Solar Batteries really Worth it?"

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from customers, clients, and the broader solar community.

The short answer? Absolutely. Especially if you need reliable power at night or during overcast, rainy days when solar generation dips.

Batteries ensure your home or business keeps running efficiently, even when the sun doesn’t shine.

In this video, Josh, our Head Electrician with over 15 years of hands-on solar experience, walks you through real-world case studies showing how batteries work in different settings.

Whether you're off-grid, hybrid, or looking to reduce your electricity bills, these examples will help you see the practical value batteries deliver.

What are the benefits to going Off-Grid?

01

You are self-sufficient through Solar & Battery.

02

You only use a generator as a back-up power supply.

03

You are not at the mercy of blackouts. You are protected.

04

You don't see a power bill or a large diesel bill again.

Off-Grid Solar Commonly Asked Questions

What is an off-grid solar system and how does it work?
An off-grid solar system is a standalone power solution that operates independently from the electricity grid.
It typically includes solar panels, a battery bank, an inverter, and a backup generator to ensure a consistent energy supply.
How much does an off-grid solar system cost?
Costs vary significantly based on energy demand, battery capacity, and system size, but for farms and rural businesses, systems can range from $30,000 to $150,000+.

However, this depends on your power needs. If you need something smaller, we can assist you with a very small system that costs $2,000 to power an Off-Grid granny flat or farm stay.

Speak to us before making a conclusion based on price - There are many ways to tackle Off-Grid systems, and we can point you in the right direction.
What kind of batteries are used, and how long do they last?
Most systems now use lithium-ion batteries, which typically last 10–15 years. Lead-acid is cheaper upfront but has a shorter lifespan and lower efficiency. AusPac Solar only sells Lithium-ion batteries for a variety of reasons, including efficiency.
How long does it take to install an off-grid system?
From design to commissioning, installations typically take 2–6 weeks, depending on the complexity and approvals. Larger systems (100kW+) can take anything from 3 – 6 months.
Can I expand my system later as my power needs grow?
Yes, systems can be designed with modularity in mind—allowing you to add panels, and batteries, or even increase inverter size as demand increases
Will it still work in remote or harsh environments?
Yes, properly designed systems are robust and weather-resistant, ideal for remote cattle stations, crop farms, and outback conditions.
Do you have a course or somewhere I can learn to design like you?
Off-grid systems are entirely self-sufficient and do not rely on utility providers.
Grid-connected systems supplement your power needs from the grid, while hybrid systems combine solar, batteries, and grid access for flexibility.
Are there government rebates or incentives available for off-grid systems?
Yes, farmers and regional businesses in Australia may be eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) or state-based incentives. Some rural development programs also offer grants.
How do I calculate the size of the system I need?
You need to assess your daily kWh usage, peak load requirements, and seasonal variations. A proper load profile and energy audit are critical.

,At AusPac Solar we do this for you and provide you with all of the information and recommendations. We then provide you with different options based on your needs, giving you the power to make an educated, informed decision.
Can off-grid solar power irrigation systems, pumps, or cold storage?
Absolutely. Off-grid systems can be tailored to power water pumps, electric fencing, bore systems, refrigeration for produce or dairy, and even machinery sheds.
Can off-grid solar help me reduce reliance on diesel generators?
Yes, many rural operators switch to solar + battery setups to cut down on generator run-time, saving thousands in fuel and servicing costs.
Can I run 100% on solar and batteries, without any backup?
Yes, many rural operators switch to solar + battery setups to cut down on generator run-time, saving thousands in fuel and servicing costs.

Solar Panel installation completed yesterday and the installers were extremely professional and cheerful. The process from enquiry to installation, including finance approval, was very straightforward. The only suggestion I have for improvement would be regular communication from approval of finance to confirmation of an installation date. Whilst everything happened within the expected time frame, I was anxious until the installers actually arrived at the property. Highly recommend AusPac Solar.

I chose to go with AusPac Solar after talking to one of their sales team who was very knowledgeable and open with every aspect of our conversation leading to my decision to go Solar with them. The installation crew were fantastic and answered all my questions and also went over the layout before installation. Overall the experience was great and the power bill  is also down to a third of what it used to be!

Can't speak highly enough of the installers. Had other companies come and look but being an older shed and even older house wireing it was all too hard for them. The Auspac crew were quick, professional and tidy. One little problem and they were back pronto to fix it. Well done crew.

We're on a Mission

At AusPac Solar, we’re driven by a deep passion for making clean, reliable solar energy accessible to every Australian.

Our mission is built on a commitment to quality, transparency, and empowering communities through energy independence. The AusPac story began with brothers Josh and Lewis Fleming.

They saw too many Australians being misled by low-quality solar systems, poor installations, and a lack of ongoing support. Motivated by the need for change, they decided it was time to raise the standard. That decision led to the creation of AusPac Solar.

Josh is a qualified electrical engineer, and Lewis brings his expertise as an accountant.

Together, they combined their knowledge and values to build a company grounded in expertise, performance, and service. Over time, they’ve brought together a team of Engineering, Marketing and Admin professionals who share their passion for helping Australians, especially farmers and agri-business owners, take control of their energy needs.

With a strong focus on quality products, expert guidance, and long-term customer care, AusPac Solar is proud to help lead Australia’s transition to renewable energy.
